Can you help us to meet the cost of Stesi’s surgery?
House of Opportunity resident, social work student and A2B volunteer, Stesi, has been suffering from chronic sinusitis for the past 18 years. A2B have sought medical consultation for him in both Tirana and Elbasan. However, aside from the poor conditions in Albanian hospitals, the healthcare system is unfortunately deeply affected by corruption.
Although public healthcare is officially free, in practice, nearly all doctors at state hospitals, after examining the patient, tell us, “The conditions here aren’t suitable for surgery — you’ll need to come to my private clinic.” These private clinics charge exorbitant fees, offer minimal care, and the doctors take no responsibility for the results.
Furthermore, individuals from Roma and Egyptian communities often encounter discriminatory treatment and a disturbing absence of humane care and dignity, even when they are willing to pay the high fees demanded.
In search of a solution, Stesi & Alketa visited Dr. Katsarkas at St. Luke’s Hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece to be assessed for treatment. In stark contrast to the care available in Albania, the hospital generously offered their support, providing a modest and very reasonable price for Stesi’s treatment and welcoming him with care, readiness, and professionalism.
Due to the severity of his condition, Stesi was given urgent treatment and then had surgery on July 30th. Stesi is a wonderful member of the A2B family and we are privileged to have seen his life totally transformed through House of Opportunity. He is excelling as a social work student and has spent weeks of his summer volunteering on A2B’s summer camps, despite the pain and discomfort was in for a lot of that time.

We are looking to raise £3,000 towards the cost of the surgery, scans, follow-up care and all necessary accommodation & travel costs (Thessaloniki is a 6 hr drive from Elbasan).
